The Falcons Nest is our new program and safe space — a place where students can explore mentorship, tutoring, comfort. This is a supportive environment where a culture of inclusion and respect is established and maintained to promote cultural awareness.
The Falcons Nest is a safe space for students. Whether a student is escaping abuse at home, discrimination due to sexuality or race, or overcoming trauma, teachers, and schools could provide much more beyond academic learning. In school, safe spaces could offer therapy, support, and a place of refuge for many, supporting focused education.
We work with our youth and help prepare them for the world; giving them a sense of belonging and support so that they can face life’s challenges in healthy ways.
We offer tutoring and educational tools to help students who may be struggling in specific courses. Students will be able to retreat to a calm space where they are comfortable enough to settle down after a conflict, process emotions, and talk through their issues. This space will allow them to freely continue with their studies and receive personal assistance as needed (tutoring). Tutors will be present during safe space hours.
The Falcons Nest will be a space where students can feel safe from bullying, social pressure, judgment, and possible intimidation. Through the safety of this space, students will grow in trust, confidence, self-awareness, conflict resolution, character development, and experience emotional growth.
Alternative to discipline:
“Punishment produces politeness, not morality.” Michael Karsen, Ph. D. University of Denver, Professor of Psychology
Research shows that punishing students does not resolve the issue that you’re trying to correct. Instead, pausing the behavior for another time, perhaps when you’re not around. Instead of detention or putting them in a quiet room to think about their actions, we believe in making these teachable moments. When we can engage with students whether they are struggling with a school subject, or acting out against a peer, we have a higher success rate to inspire and correct course.
Collectively, this space will provide support, mentorship, and social-emotional learning by helping students become aware of their feelings and teaching them how to manage them.
When the students benefit, the school benefits as well—the Falcons Nest provides the support that enhances the learning experience and school environment.
- Help alleviate teacher stress from classroom disturbances.
- Reduce the number of negative behavior referrals.
- Reduce the number of student suspensions.
- Reduce the number of students going through Restorative Justice circles. We will work closely with Restorative Justice as a follow-up source.
- Change the culture of the school by starting with a safe classroom environment and growing into a safe school environment.
